Paonia is known for the many facets of art that are practiced here. This winter there’s a great line-up of musical events taking place. Choose the one that suits your taste and come enjoy the music and dancing. Remember -- when you present your ticket stub from the Paradise or Blue Sage event, you get 10% off your room at the Bross Hotel. For event tickets call the Paradise (970-527-6610).
Lucius -- February 15, 7:30 pm, Paradise Theater. Lucius is a triple-threat of vocal harmonies, infectious hooks, and dance-inducing percussion. Pair those traits with the band’s irresistible live show and it’s easy to see why NPR Music calls them “a fabulous band playing such infectious pop songs” and Paste hails the group as “blissful.” Charismatic co-founders and lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig sing in unison delivering songs Billboard describes as “joyous, melodic anthems”. Multi-instrumentalists Andrew Burri, Peter Lalish, and Dan Molad round out this stylish, Brooklyn-based quintet.
Lake Street Dive -- March, 21, 7:30 pm, Paradise Theater. Lake Street Dive has been performing for nearly a decade after meeting as fellow students at the New England Conservatory in Boston. The New Yorker raved of their Town Hall performance: “I can’t imagine then, that Lake Street Dive—a quartet led by an amazing young singer, Rachael Price—won’t be getting some air time soon.” It is a band in constant evolution as the members jointly compose their songs and hone in on their unique “dive bar” sound.
Archduke Trio -- March 22, 7:30 pm, Blue Sage. When Beethoven looked back on this life’s work, he considered the Piano Trio in B flat major, Op. 97, commonly known as the “Archduke” Trio, to be among this finest creations. In addition this program of music for violin cello and piano will include Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces Op. 12 and Philip Glass’ Sonata for Piano and Violin.
Can we tempt you to come enjoy a play in Paonia? A local screenwriter is producing a new show in April. Is it any wonder this area is one of Colorado’s newest creative areas? Again, the Bross Hotel supports the local venues by offering a 10% reduction in room rate when you present your ticket stub for one of these plays. For play tickets call the Paradise (970-527-6610)
Back in the Dreamtime -- April 4, 5, 11, 12, 7:00 pm, and April 6, 13, 2:00 pm, Paradise Theater. The setting for local playwright Marty Durlin’s latest musical is the high school reunion of the class of ’65. As in her previous productions, the music is diverse. Back in the Dreamtime runs the gamut from operetta to country to doo-wop, including such numbers as Who Is That Old Guy? and You Could Be My Last Chance; and the sentiments in the tunes range from burning desire to a desire to be alone, and from rationalization to regret. The musical is both funny and poignant, and offers no easy answers, but an embrace of life itself.
